Our Wines

The mountain ranges and the maritime location contribute to what makes the vineyards of Tasmania so special. Vines here don’t have it easy. Winds direct from the icy Antarctic make this a very cool climate indeed and just one of many challenges Tasmanian vineyards face. But these conditions have a silver lining. The mountains, for an example, work to provide the vineyards with protection from what would otherwise be devastating frosts.

Distant South Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir

Winemaking

This Distant South Sparkling is composed of a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, sourced entirely from Tasmania. Complexity is derived from ten individual parcels of tirage base material, ranging from three to twelve years of age. The varying ages of base material are key to the quality of the wine – beautifully blended and balanced, much like a jigsaw puzzle being assembled to create a complete and exquisite picture.

Distant South Chardonnay

Winemaking

The grapes for 2017 Distant South Tasmania Chardonnay were harvested from the carefully selected sites across three different regions of Tasmania – Tamar Valley, East Coast and Coal River Valley. The grapes were picked in the cool of the evening to ensure that optimum fruit characters are retained. Throughout the winemaking process we minimised the number of wine movements to guard against oxidation and used cool temperatures during processing to retain fruit freshness. The wine was fermented in new and aged French oak barrels and left to mature in oak to impart a soft creamy texture, that helps balance the natural acidity of the wine.

Nose

Stone fruits and citrus notes completed by light toasty oak and malo-lactic nuances.

Palate

The palate is silky and voluptuous with layers of stone fruit, vanillin oak, and a delicate acidity for balance and length.

Distant South Pinot Noir

Winemaking

Grapes for 2018 Distant South Tasmania Pinot Noir were sourced from the best sites right across the region from the Northern to the East coast and Southern Tasmanian wine regions.

After harvesting, the individual parcels of fruit were crushed into small stainless steel fermenters to carefully allow for the extraction of colour and flavour prior to fermentation. The use of pump-over contributed to significant mouthfeel for the final wine. Maturation of the wine was carried out in new and aged French oak hogsheads and stainless steel tanks over a nine month period in our cool cellars.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep bright ruby hues.

Nose

Aromatic nose with intense fruit flavours of sweet plum and red cherry.

Palate

Spice and red berry fruits with a savoury, stalky, forest floor finish. Smooth yet strong tannins are balanced by excellent acid support on the lengthy, powerful finish.
